All the way on the first date? How about Social Media?

Well, did you? How about with Social Media?

Social Media is about relationships.

In your personal life, did you expect to “go all the way” on your first date. If you did, you may want to reconsider who you are dating.

Social Media etiquetteRelationships are built in social media, one contact at a time as well. Will you develop relationships that can develop into business partnerships? I hope so, if you are using social media for business.

How do you feel when you make a friend on Facebook, or on Twitter, when the first message back from that person is a link to their website?

How about if their first response is a full-blown business assault, assuming you to be a complete nit-wit if you don’t get your credit card out and jump immediately into their business?

In any relationship, it should be crawl-walk-run. First you learn more about the other person, determine what you have in common, and decide if there is a basis for you to connect up and do business together.

Do you really think that you would want everyone of your Social Media friends in your business? Would you not be better served finding the ones who are right and work with them?

So what’s the answer?

I recommend the following steps, when connecting with someone:

  1. Find out about them, who are they, where do they live, what do they do?
  2. What are they looking for? Are they happy where they are or are they looking for more?
  3. If they are looking for more, would they be a good fit for your business.
  4. If you feel like moving forward, ask for their permission to send them info, or call them to get better acquainted first.

If you treat your social media friends with respect, they will treat you with respect. If you are respectful of them, they may even want to ask you what you do and have an interest in learning more.

Isn’t that better than slamming someone with an over-pouring of info that they didn’t ask for and didn’t want?

Sounds like “Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you”.
