The Rosenthal effect is similar to the Pygmalion effect
Well what is the Rosenthal effect and what does it have to do with me?
The Pygmalion effect, or Rosenthal effect, is the phenomenon whereby higher expectations lead to an increase in performance. … A corollary of the Pygmalion effect is the golem effect, in which low expectations lead to a decrease in performance; both effects are forms of self-fulfilling prophecy.
The experiment:
You may have heard of the experiment where researchers told teachers at the beginning of the school year that their class was either smart, average, or not so smart. Followup studies later in the school year found that the class results were indeed impacted, where those considered smarter by their teachers achieved higher results than those identified as average, and unfortunately those identified as “not so smart” got less than average results.
What can we learn from the Rosenthal Effect?
First, if you have children, let them know that you expect only the best from them, as it’s far better for them to live up to your higher expectations than live down to lower expectations.
Secondly, what do you expect from yourself?
If you are saying negative things about yourself
- why do bad things always happen to me?
- I’m not good at that
- I won’t be able to do that
- I can’t
What does this mean to You?
Guess what, that is exactly what you are speaking into existence, as you are programming your subconscious mind with negativity, and of course you will get negative results.
The good news is that you can, and should, program your subconscious mind with positive thoughts and expectations, so that you are attracting positive forces to you to make it happen, to get positive results.
It is true, “you become what you think about most of the time”. Even more importantly, your subconscious mind is influenced even more by what you say to yourself out loud.
Many people use the power of positive affirmations, repeating them out loud the last thing of the day, so that their subconscious mind is working on their behalf while they are sleeping.
Many books have been written on this subject, such as “As a Man Thinketh” and from the Good Book: Proverbs 18:21 – Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
I caution you to refrain from unleashing your tongue’s negative power and that you may reap the fruits of success by sewing positive seeds by the words you speak.
What are your thoughts? I would love your comments and please share if you got value from these thoughts.
Be blessed
