Give Me This Mountain!

courage and faithfulness of Caleb

Give me this mountain

Did the Lord promise you a mountain?

Did he give you a dream that is not yet fulfilled?
Could it be that you have not yet claimed it from Him?

Give me this mountain was the message from my Pastor (Greg Lewis) last Sunday.

The following text from Joshua 14 gives the background for this question.

Caleb Inherits Hebron
6 Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him: “You know the word which the Lord said to Moses the man of God concerning you and me in Kadesh Barnea. 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back word to him as it was in my heart. 8 Nevertheless my brethren who went up with me made the [a]heart of the people melt, but I wholly followed the Lord my God. 9 So Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land where your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children’s forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ 10 And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel [b]wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. 11 As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in. 12 Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”
13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. 14 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel. 15 And the name of Hebron formerly was Kirjath Arba (Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim).
Then the land had rest from war.

If the Lord did promise you a mountain?

Have you claimed “give me my mountain”?

Could He be waiting for you to step out in faith and ask Him?

I have often been drawn to the story of Joshua and Caleb, who were 2 of the 12 spies that Moses sent into the Promised Land, who reported back to the Israelites that they were ready in faith to take the land that the Lord had promised them, while the other 10 clung to their fear of the situation they saw.

In this verse, Caleb was 85 years old and strong, and made his claim to Joshua to collect his promise from the Lord, “give me this mountain”.

How many of us have shown fear in our senior years, rather than stepping out in faith to grab what is in our heart to collect?

give me this mountain

Getting older does seem to nurture fear rather than faith, right?

Are you ready to claim your mountain?

Maybe the first “give me this mountain” for you should be to yourself?

What have you been promised?

I have checked out my mountain and I have found the keys to my dream retirement lifestyle.

And what are these keys you may ask?

For me they are, in order:

  1. Health
  2. Money
  3. Time

What good is money and time when you lack health, lacking the strength to do what you have put off until retirement?
And I have some strong ideas on what causes poor health, and what we can do to change that.

And with good health, you still need money to do what you want to do.

Unfortunately, many seniors have seen their retirement next eggs erode, and they end up working, often at minimum wage jobs, to make ends meet.
As I watch many seniors who work at Walmart and other businesses, I wonder what their dreams were as youngsters, and I suspect working at Walmart in their 60’s and 70’s was not on that list.

So back to the 3 keys

  1. If you lack health, you may buck the system of supporting the medical industry and take charge of your own health
  2. If you lack money, you can set yourself up to earn additional money on a part-time basis to free up time to do what you dreamed to do. After all, the internet doesn’t care how old you are!
  3. This action should give you the third key – Time

So there you have it, my version of a dream retirement lifestyle is having Health + Time + Money, together at the same time.

So Ron, how do I get started?

May I suggest that as our dreams are probably different, that the path to achieve them may differ as well.

However, it is likely that we have many common threads.

Let’s discuss your options to move down the road from where you are to get to where you dreamed you would be by now.
