I am the master of my fate, captain of my soul.
What does this mean in your life?
Taken in context, William Ernest Henley wrote this while recovering from a leg amputation and being told the other leg would require amputation, too. So, he is referring to his ability to choose how to respond. He decided to get a second opinion. Good move. He didn’t have to lose the leg after all.
We cannot choose what happens to us, but we can choose whether or not to allow it to define us.
The key word here: CHOOSE
We can chose to be “master of my fate and captain of my soul”.
That is a personal decision because, we can control our thoughts.
But look around you, it seems like nobody controls what happens to them. It’s always someone else’s fault, right?
That may be true in a way but we do have the power to control our thoughts – that is the real story behind being Master of My Fate, Captain of My Soul.
Thoughts are Things
And controlling our thoughts means we can control how we respond to life’s situations.
As bad things happen to good people, all of us will have the opportunity to respond in our own way to these situations.
May I be so bold as to state how we respond determines if we are the victim or the victor in these situations.
Do you always respond as the victor?
I know I don’t. But that is the plan to which I strive.
What happens if you don’t control your thoughts, and just drift with the tide in response to what happens to you and around you?
You become powerless right? If it’s not in your control, you can only blame bad luck or everyone else.
But, if you control your thoughts, you will have command of your situation, your life.
You will be the master of your fate and captain of your soul, right?
And how will you feel? Powerless in the flow of life? I say No Way!
You will be empowered,
knowing that what happens around you will not change who you are.
On a personal note, I find it much easier to be Master of My Fate, by relinquishing control.
Now that sounds like a contradiction, but I am far more powerful relying on His strength rather than just my own.
Why not, as a Christ follower, I can recognize my position as a Son of the most high God.
