Can You Pass the SPAM Test?

Will you Pass or Fail the spam Test?

Don’t we all have our own definitions of what is SPAM, much as we all have our own definitions of junk mail arriving at our door?

what is SPAM

To me, it’s almost like the Golden Rule, do unto other as you would have them do unto you. By the way, I personally feel you can SPAM just one person on Facebook, that it doesn’t require a large number of recipients per the above definition.

First a disclaimer – I do not claim that I have not violated these SPAM rules in the past, as I am sure when I started in a home business, I took advice from others who didn’t know any better either. The point of this post is not to criticize but to make us all better, me included. Just remember that the tide lifts all boats equally so let’s bring in a good tide.

Here is a short SPAM Test that may help you determine if crossed the line to become a Spammer (ouch).

Let’s start with Facebook, as that’s where most of us Baby Boomers hang out. What does Facebook consider as SPAM?

Facebook SPAM

Have you ever had someone post a commercial message onto your timeline? If so, how did that make you feel? Like your privacy had been violated?

So let’s start our SPAM Test with Facebook. Are you guilty of these “internet sins”?

  • Posting photos of something you are promoting onto a friend’s timeline?
  • Tagging people in posts and pictures who were not there?
  • Posting to timelines of people you really do not know personally?
  • Sending people unsolicited links for something you are promoting, rather than something you know they would have an interest

SPAM Test Results:

  • If you answered yes to any of the above, you are a potential spammer.
  • If you answered yes to more than one of the above, you are a spammer

OK, did I make you feel bad? Sorry…. I bet you know what I am talking about because I bet it has been done to you, and maybe you figured it’s OK because “everybody does it”.

Sounds like your mother right, just because everyone does it doesn’t mean that you have to…

What can we do to make Social Media a more polite place?

Well you can probably take a clue from the SPAM Test questions.

  1. Don’t tag people in posts that have nothing to do with the posts
  2. Don’t post commercial messages on a friend’s timeline
  3. In general, don’t send unsolicited links to something you are promoting, or post unsolicited links to someone with whom you wouldn’t get on the phone and talk to about it.

Wouldn’t you enjoy a friendlier social media experience?

Remember, it’s called Social Media as most people are there to be social…..

Now we could talk about Twitter, or Linkedin, or Instagram or whatever, but good practices are good practices across the board. I like to call it courtesy and respect. Respect for the platform and respect for the people.

And if you are using Social Media for Business, you may find my recent blog posts to be helpful

How be we work together, all of us, to make Social Media a more respectful medium.
