Phone Control – are You Master or Servant?

Phone control – are you or your phone in control of your life?

What is your phone to you?
Mine is
  • an actual phone used to talk to people
  • a texting device
  • an email device, to both send and receive
  • a camera (in fact, it is two cameras)
  • a guide to me when I am lost, or to avoid traffic jams
  • a thermometer – tells me how to dress for today’s weather
  • an info source – you can ask Google almost anything
  • a bank machine, I can check my accounts, pay bills, deposit checks
  • a photo storage device
  • a social media terminal, I can check on my friends online
  • it’s a clock, tells me the time and is also an alarm clock, a stop watch even
You get the point, it is all those things and much more.

However, my phone demands my time

as it rings, beeps, burps, vibrates, sounds different tones, always interrupting what I am doing.
I think that I am developing ADD
  • it distracts me when I am talking with people
  • it distracts me when I am eating, driving, maybe even sleeping
  • it is my friend when I am waiting for an appointment, maybe I should spend more time reading my Kindle books than checking Facebook?

On a positive note, my phone is an organizational tool

  • my schedule is in front of me
  • my to-do list is in front of me
  • my phone book is readily available
  • I have access to all my files right in my hand

How does that benefit you and me?

  • Freedom – I can work or play wherever I am
  • Freedom – I can be where ever I want to be (within limits)
  • Freedom – I am untethered from a land line or a desktop computer

But only you can decide who is in charge of your life

  • but are you a Master to your phone, or are you a Servant
  • as for me, I am a bit of both 🙂
What advice can I give you to improve your life, and your relationships?
  1. be present to who you are with, give them the respect of your full attention
  2. be polite, be sensitive to those around you (you know what it’s like when the guy next to you feels that his phone call is more important than your environment)
  3. set limits on when the phone (or computer) can control your time
  4. set appointments on your schedule to check email, or for your personal use of Facebook etc.

Bottom line, let the phone work for you, but keep phone control of your life!
You may even want to put it on “airplane mode” more often, as this may enhance your peace of mind – let the technology of voice mail be your friend.
May you be the Master and not the Servant, in your relationship with your phone.
Peace my friend!
